"Our final profile features Mengjia Chen of our San Diego school. The pandemic disrupted all the plans for the school, since it had been open just one month before lockdowns," said Brian Gross, president of Bach to Rock. "Mengjia quickly pivoted to virtual lessons and was able to jumpstart the school within a few months. Her determination and dedication to getting the school off the ground were inspirational," added Gross.
As a busy mom to a six-year-old, four-year-old and eight-month-old, Chen has many demands on her time. The school is practically a second home to her kids, with her six-year-old already taking drum lessons and about to join a band. "Prior to the birth of my eight-month-old, I worked in the school every day. I'd bring my two oldest boys to the school with me in the afternoons. Since then, I've transitioned to remote oversight and regular communication with my director," said Chen. She has found that working efficiently, in small chunks of time over the phone and online, has been essential.
