BRONX, N.Y., June 19, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Monroe College, a national leader in educating first-generation and international students, held its 90th Annual Commencement last Friday at Radio City Music Hall in midtown Manhattan. Degrees were conferred on 2,196 students from around the world at its joyous celebration of the Class of 2023.

Two separate ceremonies were held to accommodate the families and friends of the students earning Associate, Bachelor's, or Master's degrees or professional and advanced certificates.

The 1,007 graduates participating in the morning ceremony completed programs of study in Monroe's School of Allied Health Professions, School of Education, School of Hospitality Management (and Culinary Institute of New York), School of Information Technology, and School of Nursing. The Grand Marshal was Dr. Ed Schneiderman, a valued member of staff for 33 years who currently serves as Assistant Vice President for Institutional Research and Reporting. Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson gave the keynote address.

The afternoon ceremony conferred degrees on 325 graduate students from the Monroe's King Graduate School, as well as 864 undergraduate students from the School of Business and Accounting and School of Criminal and Social Justice. Maria Ortiz, a Student Services Advisor who has been with Monroe for 32 years, led the processional as Grand Marshal. New York State Assemblymember Kenny Burgos gave the keynote address.

Both ceremonies highlighted Monroe's 90th anniversary this year. Founded in 1933, the institution now known as Monroe College started as a secretarial school in the West Farms section of the Bronx with seven students. Today, Monroe educates 8,000 students each year, offering degree and certificate programs from New York campuses in the Bronx and New Rochelle, as well as in the Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia. Students may also pursue degree programs through Monroe Online.

The College's three-semester academic calendar enables Monroe students to earn 45 or more college credits per year (compared to the 30 credits college students typically earn per year at other institutions). That means that many of this year's graduates earned their Bachelor's degree in three years or their Associate degree in less than two years.

Graduates in the Class of 2023 represent more than 50 countries. In addition to students from the U.S. and its territories, the next largest contingents were from, in order: China, India, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Bahamas, Sint Maarten, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Taiwan, Nepal, and Saint Lucia.

The College conferred 325 Master's degrees, 908 Bachelor's degrees, and 892 Associate degrees this year, as well as awarded 71 professional and advanced certificates.
