Vastly bigger than the Black Summer: 84 million hectares of northern Australia burned in 2023

Fires burned across an area eight times as big as the 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires that tore through 10 million hectares in southeast Australia.

Key Points:
  • Fires burned across an area eight times as big as the 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires that tore through 10 million hectares in southeast Australia.
  • My research shows the 2023 fires burned more than 84 million hectares of desert and savannah in northern Australia.
  • In just a few weeks of September and October, more than 18 million hectares burned across the Barkly, Tanami and Great Sandy Deserts of the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

Why did this happen?

  • When it dries out, grass becomes fuel for fires.
  • For example, you can see the pattern of more fire following wet years repeating at periodic intervals over the past 20 years of fire in the Northern Territory.
  • In this way, La Niña is the major driver of these massive fires in the desert.
  • In the NT alone, more than 55 million hectares burned in 2011, compared with 43 million in 2023.

How can fires be managed?

  • The sophisticated use of fire in Australia’s highly flammable tropical savannas has been recognised as the world’s best wildfire management system.
  • It also hinders the spread of fire because areas subject to more recent fire have insufficient fuel to carry new fires for many years.
  • Even though large fires still ripped through these deserts in 2023, by mapping the fuel reduction fires and overlaying the spread of subsequent wildfires, we can see the 2023 fires were limited by previous burns.
  • For example, the fire spread animation below shows fires moving through a complex mosaic comprising fuel of different ages.

The fires of greatest concern to government agencies were the Barkly fires that threatened the town of Tennant Creek.

Preparing for the future

  • Desert fire management is still under-resourced and poorly understood.

Rugby stadiums are sold as an economic asset – but NZ needs to ask if they’re really worth it

But is a new stadium really value for money for Auckland ratepayers?

Key Points:
  • But is a new stadium really value for money for Auckland ratepayers?
  • Large stadiums are sold as an economic boon for cities.
  • These stadiums are often opposed by sections of the communities asked to pay for them.

For the love of the game

  • When the game was still amateur, it was expected to build and maintain its own stadiums.
  • For example, Carisbrook in Dunedin was initially built by the Otago Rugby Football Union, while Eden Park was built by various Auckland sports associations.
  • Taxpayers and ratepayers started paying significant amounts for construction of rugby and “multi-use” stadiums.
  • Ed Sheeran cited the shape of the stadium – rectangular rather than oval – as a reason for skipping the city on his 2023 world tour.

Costs and benefits

  • Whether it is there from the outset or creeps in later, the case for funding from the community is usually based on “economic impact analysis”.
  • This figure is then increased via what is known as an “economic impact multiplier” to create a topline figure in support of the stadiums.
  • And events may have been held in the community at existing venues before the new stadium was built.

Borrowing and interest costs

  • Te Kaha, which cost NZ$683 million to build, was promoted as having an annual $50 million positive economic for the region once it opened.
  • But at the same time, Christchurch ratepayers are expected to pay the majority of the construction costs ($453m), while the crown invested $220m.
  • A significant part of the council investment was borrowed, meaning ratepayers will also be paying for the interest on this debt.

From sumptuous engravings to stick-figure sketches, Passover Haggadahs − and their art − have been evolving for centuries

Retrieved on:

The Jewish festival of Passover recalls the biblical story of the Israelites enslaved by Egypt and their miraculous escape.

Key Points:
  • The Jewish festival of Passover recalls the biblical story of the Israelites enslaved by Egypt and their miraculous escape.
  • Every year, a written guide known as a “Haggadah” is read at the Seder table.
  • The core text comprises a description of ritual foods, the story of the Exodus, blessings, commentaries, hymns and songs.

An illustrated classic

One of the greatest examples our library has of this blending of cultures was printed in Amsterdam in 1695.

  • The Amsterdam Haggadah was illustrated by Abraham Bar Yaakov, a German pastor who converted to Judaism.
  • In addition, he incorporated a pull-out map of the route of the Exodus and an imaginative rendering of the Temple in Jerusalem.
  • The text, traditionally written in Hebrew and Aramaic, included instructions in Yiddish and Ladino, the everyday languages for Jews in Europe.
  • The Amsterdam Haggadah proved to be incredibly influential on later versions, with its illustrations copied into the modern era.

A Haggadah for everyone

  • Modern Haggadah illustrations also reflected developments in the art world.
  • In 1920s Berlin, a Jewish art teacher, Otto Geismar, reinterpreted the story of the Exodus using plain, black-and-white, modernist “stick figures” – another Haggadah in our collection.
  • Geismar even injected elements of humor: A child is shown asleep at the table, and in another scene a family of stick figures is engaged in animated conversation and debate.
  • In his depictions of ancient Israelite slaves, stick figures appear especially burdened with heavy loads on their backs.

Wine – and coffee

  • Meanwhile, some suppliers sensed an opportunity to adapt it for their own needs.
  • Owner Sam Schapiro savvily linked his products to the Seder, during which participants drink four small cups of sacramental wine.
  • Wine, seen at this point as a luxury item, also symbolized freedom.
  • Schapiro’s Haggadah fulfilled the commandment to relate the story of the Exodus for a new generation – but the opening pages also provide a tribute in Yiddish to Sam Schapiro’s 40-year-old company.
  • Here Schapiro’s is praised for being the place where religious men and intellectuals alike could get together over a good glass of wine.

Newly uncovered Helen of Troy fresco shows Pompeii’s elite were eager for ancient Greek stories about women

Retrieved on:

Imagine seeing the face of Helen of Troy staring back at you, from within the ashes of a 2,000-year-old city.

Key Points:
  • Imagine seeing the face of Helen of Troy staring back at you, from within the ashes of a 2,000-year-old city.
  • And these ashes aren’t the scars of a city burned down for the sake of “the face that launch’d a thousand ships”.
  • Helen is depicted in stunning detail (alongside Paris, the prince of Troy) in one of the paintings on the recently discovered fresco wall of the winter dining room of a Pompeian villa.
  • Read more:
Pompeii’s House of the Vettii reopens: a reminder that Roman sexuality was far more complex than simply gay or straight

The women of Troy

  • It’s not just their unusual style, which shows the painters experimenting with new techniques and representing the latest artistic fashions.
  • It’s the trio of women from Greek myth collected together in a way that makes us see the Trojan war myth anew – and puts the stories of women at the forefront.
  • It shows that, just like us, Pompeii’s elite were well versed in – and eager for – stories of the women of ancient Greek myth.

The role of the fresco

  • Sit on one side, and you’d be faced with the image of Helen’s very first encounter with Paris.
  • Is there a sense that Helen is lingering, uncertain, with that back foot scraping behind her?
  • You can just imagine the Pompeian literati quaffing glasses of expensive wine as they gazed at Helen’s face and debated the subject.
  • This is the price of ownership over your body as a woman in Greek myth – the loss of your voice.
  • As the grim skeletons discovered in the villa show, just like the Trojans, Verus and his guests didn’t listen to Cassandra either.
