Meta's Threads is surging, but mass migration from Twitter is likely to remain an uphill battle

Most recently the microblogging platform backed by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, Bluesky, saw a surge of sign-ups in the days following Twitter’s rate limit, and Meta launched its microblogging platform Threads on July 5.

Key Points:
  • Most recently the microblogging platform backed by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, Bluesky, saw a surge of sign-ups in the days following Twitter’s rate limit, and Meta launched its microblogging platform Threads on July 5.
  • Even very different forms of social media such as TikTok are benefiting from what many see as Twitter’s imminent demise.
  • The turmoil at Twitter is causing many of the company’s users to consider leaving the platform.
  • Research on previous social media platform migrations shows what might lie ahead for Twitter users who fly the coop.

‘You go first’

    • These migrations are in large part driven by network effects, meaning that the value of a new platform depends on who else is there.
    • For this reason, the “death” of a platform – whether from a controversy, disliked change or competition – tends to be a slow, gradual process.

It’ll never be the same

    • What makes Twitter Twitter isn’t the technology, it’s the particular configuration of interactions that takes place there.
    • And there is essentially zero chance that Twitter, as it exists now, could be reconstituted on another platform.
    • But as our study implies, migrations always have a cost, and even for smaller communities, some people will get lost along the way.

The ties that bind

    • They might be unwilling to completely cut ties all at once, but they might dip their toes into a new platform by sharing the same content on both.
    • Ways to import networks from another platform also help to maintain communities.
    • In this sense, Threads has an advantage over other Twitter alternatives because users sign up via their Instagram accounts.
    • But even if there is a price to pay for leaving a platform, communities can be incredibly resilient.

As we approach the release of the final instalment of the Sailor Moon Crystal reboot, I can’t help but wonder: why are we still obsessed with fighting evil by moonlight and winning love by daylight?

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon

    • Yet there was something about Sailor Moon that caught the public’s imagination, and changed anime in Japan – and later the rest of the world – for good.
    • Written by Naoko Takeuchi as a continuation of her series Code Name: V, Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn (Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon) ran from 1991-97.
    • Sailor Moon takes stories about friendship and love and mixes them with a monster of the day format and colour-coded superheroes.

Girls comics

    • Both shōjo (girls) and shōnen (boys) manga can include fast-paced, action-packed narratives, love stories, science fiction, high fantasy and suspense.
    • Manga for girls and young women are more likely to be linked to fashion and will often include full body images of characters to illustrate the latest styles.
    • For western and Anglophone viewers in the late 1990s, Sailor Moon provided a role model alongside Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Xena: Warrior Princess for girls and young women, showing that being a princess didn’t preclude kicking arse.

Anniversary fancy goods

    • These might be as simple as pre-cut cardboard toys that can be torn out and folded, or designer collaborations on bags, pencil cases and other accessories.
    • Causing more of a stir was a collaboration with lingerie company Peach John, which saw sailor collar padded bras and matching panties released as part of Sailor Moon’s 20th anniversary.
    • At that time, 20 was the legal age of adulthood in Japan (this has recently been lowered to 18).

Coming of age in Sailor Moon

    • The characters are now at the age of shoe appreciation – as is her global audience of fans, similar to Sex and the City protagonists.
    • While some questioned Sailor Moon’s suitability as a mascot for STI awareness, in many ways this is just another monster of the day to be vanquished.

A queer wonderland

    • Sailor Moon Cosmos, the final two-part film, is due to be released on June 9 and June 30.
    • These two films cover the final season of the 1990s anime, Sailor Moon Sailor Stars, and the equivalent manga.

Can death on the screen feel the same as a 'real' one?

Death is a part of life, an adage usually reserved for those who physically exist in our lives – family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances.

Key Points:
  • Death is a part of life, an adage usually reserved for those who physically exist in our lives – family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances.
  • So what happens when a profound death experience happens on the screen?
  • Via television, we get access to catastrophic loss, multiple casualty events, loss after significant illness – as well as seeing how death impacts the people left behind.

Why does this grief feel real from an armchair perspective?

    • When a show realistically portrays grief in its purest form, the emotive or reflective reaction can unlock our own grief.
    • We might be switching on a program with the intention of relaxation, only to be met with trauma and sadness.
    • Warnings prior to a scene, or consistent information at the end of an episode about seeking additional support, might be minimal.

What is this grief called?

    • This form of parasocial grieving, described as having feelings attached to a pseudo-relationship, does feel real, does have consequences and does need space to be managed.
    • I would encourage you to pause for a moment and remember the ones that did get under our skin.
    • Death in those spaces – and the reactions to that loss – can feel as if they break that contract.
