NeurOptics Neurological Pupil index (NPi) and automated pupillometry are now included in the updated 2021 European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) Guidelines for post-resuscitation care as an objective measurement supporting neurological prognosis in patients following cardiac arrest.

Key Points:
  • NeurOptics Neurological Pupil index (NPi) and automated pupillometry are now included in the updated 2021 European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) Guidelines for post-resuscitation care as an objective measurement supporting neurological prognosis in patients following cardiac arrest.
  • The guidelines were last updated in 2015 and reflect alignment with the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and associated member councils.
  • NeurOptics NPi Pupillometry has emerged as an important technology that provides a quantitative measurement of pupil size and reactivity, expressed as the Neurological Pupil index (NPi).

CHOP Researchers Find Bystander CPR with Rescue Breathing Leads to Better Outcomes in Pediatric Cardiac Arrest

The findings, published today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, support the use of bystander CPR with rescue breathing in children experiencing cardiac arrest.

Key Points:
  • The findings, published today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, support the use of bystander CPR with rescue breathing in children experiencing cardiac arrest.
  • For infants in particular, our study shows that CPR with rescue breathing is the only type of CPR that is associated with good neurological outcomes; infants who received compression-only CPR had similar outcomes to infants who did not receive bystander CPR."
  • However, the researchers suspected this form of CPR might be less effective in children, as pediatric cardiac arrest most often stems from breathing problems.
  • The researchers found that less than half (46.5%) of those who experienced pediatric cardiac arrest outside of the hospital received bystander CPR.
