A decade on, the NDIS has had triumphs, challenges and controversies. Where to from here?

Retrieved on:
Friday, June 30, 2023

Officially launched in July 2013, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) reached full rollout in 2020.

Key Points:
  • Officially launched in July 2013, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) reached full rollout in 2020.
  • A decade later, Australians with disability, their families, advocates and support providers are waiting for the NDIS independent review and Disability Royal Commission findings, both due around October.

The goal posts

    • It would be administered at the federal level with joint funding from state and territory governments.
    • It would also aim to foster inclusion and community awareness and provide information and referrals to services outside the NDIS (such as health and education).
    • Read more:
Part-time work is valuable to people with disability – but full time is more likely to attract government support

Debates and controversies

    • But in 2022, the NDIS Act 2013 was changed to embed the principle of co-design into the legislation and new funding followed.
    • Read more:
A disabled NDIA chair is a great first move in the NDIS reset.
    • Now expected to cost A$50 billion by 2025, the NDIS will overtake the cost of Medicare or defence.
    • In our research, incorporating the lived experience of NDIS participants, some people have said their lives have been transformed through the NDIS.
    • Read more:
What we know about the NDIS cuts, and what they'll mean for people with disability and their families

Untapped potential

    • Boosting the NDIA workforce, as announced by NDIS Minister Bill Shorten, should help and also reduce mistakes and delays.
    • And there needs to be capacity development for NDIS participants.
    • Read more:
The government says NDIS supports should be 'evidence-based' – but can they be?

A new decade

    • It is clear NDIS reform will stay front-of-mind for some time yet.
    • It is crucial people with disability remain central and involved in genuinely co-designing the second decade of the NDIS and beyond.

Press release - EU job seekers’ aid worth €2.2 million for 603 dismissed workers in Belgium

Retrieved on:
Friday, June 30, 2023

On Thursday, the Committee on Budgets approved Belgium’s request for support from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund for Displaced Workers (EGF).

Key Points:
  • On Thursday, the Committee on Budgets approved Belgium’s request for support from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund for Displaced Workers (EGF).
  • MEPs acknowledged that “the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine have reduced economic competitiveness and have a negative impact on economic growth in Belgium”.
  • The total estimated cost of these measures amounts to approximately €2.5 million, of which the EGF will cover 85% (€2.2 million).
  • Member states can apply for EU funding when at least 200 workers lose their jobs within a specific reference period.

Your energy bills are finally about to go down – here's why

Retrieved on:
Thursday, June 29, 2023

The average annual household energy bill (including the fixed daily amount that you pay regardless of energy use) will fall by 17% from £2,500 to £2,074.

Key Points:
  • The average annual household energy bill (including the fixed daily amount that you pay regardless of energy use) will fall by 17% from £2,500 to £2,074.
  • The cap has been lowered because wholesale energy prices (the price at which your supplier buys energy) are falling and may be stabilising.
  • And even if your bill is falling, the drop may bring no sudden relief for several reasons.

Energy bills fall but squeeze on budgets remains

    • The energy bill support scheme which gave every household a £400 discount on their bill last winter ended in March 2023.
    • This, along with the emergency price guarantee replacing Ofgem’s price cap, kept bills lower than they would otherwise have been.
    • Second, the energy bills of businesses that supply goods and services – for example, producing and transporting the food you buy in supermarkets – are not covered by the cap.

Households are conserving energy

    • Energy bills are a big expense for most households at the moment, but moreso for those on lower incomes and those who can’t avoid using a lot of energy, perhaps due to medical equipment.
    • For better-off households, that meant cutting wasteful use – whereas in poorer homes, it probably meant underheating.

Ensure your direct debit reflects your energy use

    • For those paying for energy via direct debit, it’s worth checking that your monthly payments are reasonable for the amount of energy you are actually using.
    • My family’s own efforts to conserve energy over the winter meant we built up quite a substantial credit across our electricity and gas accounts.
    • There is still much to be done to ensure sustainable, accessible and affordable energy for all in the UK.
