ST. LOUIS, June 15, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- A St. Louis father is suing Lily Pad Learning Center, claiming the daycare center violated multiple safety laws that resulted in a caregiver abusing his 1-year-old daughter in January 2023. The lawsuit states surveillance video at the facility captured a worker force-feeding the infant to the point of choking and vomiting, slamming her onto a diaper changing table, and demonstrating other abusive treatment for more than 33 minutes. The complaint also claims Lily Pad Learning Center broke state laws by falsifying an incident report about the malicious actions, including the origins of a bruise on the girl's arm.

Key Points:
  • Jamyil Thomas, the infant's father, continued to question workers at Lily Pad Learning Center about the bruises and scratches on his daughter's body.
  • The lawsuit claims the daycare workers lied about the bruises, pretended his daughter was sick, and gave her "hugs" to soothe her.
  • The suit continues Lily Pad Learning Center had 48 citations from August 2019 to the January 2023 incident involving the infant.
  • The case is Jamyil Thomas, as next friend and father of Winter Thomas, a minor child, vs. Lily Pad Learning Center #2, LLC, d/b/a Lily Pad Learning Center, Case No.

Daniel Penny's GiveSendGo campaign: Crowdfunding primarily benefits the most privileged

Retrieved on:

A GiveSendGo crowdfunding campaign has raised over $2.8 million from 57,000 donations for Daniel Penny’s legal expenses.

Key Points:
  • A GiveSendGo crowdfunding campaign has raised over $2.8 million from 57,000 donations for Daniel Penny’s legal expenses.
  • While many people on the left have expressed dismay at the success of this fundraiser, GiveSendGo isn’t necessarily wrong to host it.

Violent crime ban

    • Penny’s fundraiser was likely created on GiveSendGo rather than the much larger and better known GoFundMe website because GoFundMe has a policy against allowing fundraisers for the legal defence of people accused of violent crimes.
    • In many cases these fundraisers have been enormously successful, raising hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars.
    • But helping people accused of violent crimes to defend themselves in court is a different matter.

Unfair advantage

    • Nonetheless, Penny’s fundraiser shows crowdfunding is a wildly unfair way of securing this and other rights.
    • He has benefited from the politicization of his actions and wide support on the political right, including calls to support the fundraiser from politicians like Florida Gov.
    • People with more privileged networks can expect better outcomes than people in positions of greater relative need.

Campaigns with no support

    • What this means is that crowdfunding isn’t a fair means for people accused of violent crimes to pay for their legal defence.
    • For every Daniel Penny or Kyle Rittenhouse, there are thousands of campaigns that get little or no public support.
    • Perhaps their alleged crimes are abhorrent and people would have no interest in financially supporting those accused of them.

Reputational damage

    • GoFundMe’s decision to ban campaigns for the legal defence of people accused of violent crimes was likely driven by reputational concerns rather than principle.
    • The problem is that crowdfunding operates largely as a popularity contest, distributing help in deeply inequitable ways.

Unsafe foods, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), contribute to poor health, including impaired growth and development, micro-nutrient deficiencies, noncommunicable and infectious diseases, and mental illness.

Key Points:
  • Unsafe foods, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), contribute to poor health, including impaired growth and development, micro-nutrient deficiencies, noncommunicable and infectious diseases, and mental illness.
  • Antonina Mutoro, a nutrition researcher at the African Population and Health Research Center, explains what causes food contamination and how we can lower the risk of disease.

What is food contamination?

Access to safe and nutritious food is a basic human right which many do not enjoy, partly because of food contamination. This is defined as the presence of harmful chemicals and microorganisms in food that can cause illness. According to the WHO, food contamination affects about one in every ten people globally and causes about 420,000 deaths annually. Food contamination can be:

What are the most common causes of food contamination?

    • The most common cause of food contamination is poor food handling.
    • Using dirty utensils, not washing fruits and vegetables with clean water, and storing raw and cooked food in the same place can also be harmful.
    • In Kenya, for instance, the contamination of meat, fruits and vegetables with human waste is relatively common.
    • Street foods are another common source of food contamination.

What are the signs that you’ve eaten contaminated food?

    • They account for more than 200 food-borne illnesses, including typhoid, cholera and listeriosis.
    • Food-borne illnesses usually present as diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach pains.
    • In severe cases, food-borne illnesses can lead to neurological disorders, organ failure and even death.

What can we do to prevent food contamination?

Food-borne illnesses also have negative economic impacts, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The World Bank estimates it costs more than US$15 billion annually to treat these illnesses in these countries. So it’s important to have preventive strategies in place. Food contamination can be prevented through simple measures:
    • Food vendors also need to be trained on food safety, and provided with clean water and proper sanitation.
    • In Kenya, the project is working closely with the Nairobi county government to develop a food safety training manual targeting street food vendors.
