Tuition Discount Rates at Private Colleges and Universities Hit All-Time Highs

Thursday, May 19, 2022

WASHINGTON, May 19, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Average private college and university tuition discount rates continue to climb—but a new analysis from the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) shows correlation between the longstanding financial aid strategy and admissions selectivity.

Key Points:
  • In the 2021 NACUBO Tuition Discounting Study, 359 private, nonprofit colleges and universities reported an estimated 54.5 percent average institutional tuition discount rate for first-time, full-time, first-year students in 2020-21 and 49 percent for all undergraduatesboth record highs.
  • The extent to which private institutions discount their published tuition may differ.
  • "These results suggest that although the most selective colleges and universities still heavily discount tuition, these schools do not rely on tuition discounting as an enrollment strategy to the same extent as other institutions," Redd said.
  • "These private, nonprofit colleges and universities made significant efforts to make higher education more affordable, even as they navigated the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic," Redd said.
