Tom Wilkinson: an actor of great humanity who seldom played the lead but dominated the screen

Retrieved on:

Wilkinson seldom played the leading man, and yet he often dominated the screen.

Key Points:
  • Wilkinson seldom played the leading man, and yet he often dominated the screen.
  • Wilkinson’s Benjamin Franklin is a clever, witty, cantankerous extrovert, often dominating scenes because he has the most dialogue.
  • In many ways, that was unusual in the characters Wilkinson portrayed (with the exception perhaps of Arthur Edens in 2007’s Michael Clayton).

Low-key roles that shine

  • His homosexuality isn’t commented on by the other characters, and Wilkinson carries it with the confidence of full acceptance.
  • Again, the quiet confidence in the conviction of having been born in the wrong body shines through Wilkinson’s performance.
  • But in the end, it is clear that his moral compass is functioning better than that of his fellow clerics.
  • His impeccable performances will be long remembered, and will serve to remind us of what we have lost in Tom Wilkinson.

Should I have children? Why society's idealisation of motherhood benefits no one

Retrieved on:

Words like childless or childfree firmly place the person without a child as the one lacking.

Key Points:
  • Words like childless or childfree firmly place the person without a child as the one lacking.
  • Women who decide not to have children are marked as outsiders by our social and cultural norms.
  • The ‘childless woman’ and the ‘mother’ are a false polarity, which has served the institutions both of motherhood and heterosexuality.
  • The idealisation of motherhood undermines all women, irrespective of their own choices, as I write in my book (M)otherhood: On the choices of being a woman.

Decisions and regret

Often, discussions about having a child are shaped in terms of regret. What if you regret it and it is too late? What if you change your mind and it is too late?

  • This was followed up with another study, published later in 2023, which looked more deeply at people who are childfree by choice.
  • Turns out they’re pretty happy with their decisions.
  • On the other hand, studies have shown that people who have children are more likely to regret this choice.
  • In 2021, a survey by YouGov of over 1,200 British parents found that 8% say they currently regret having children.
  • While we might believe that we are perfectly autonomous and free to make our decisions at will, we are never free of our societal and cultural context.

Beyond Sacrifice: EnrichedHQ's Mission to Offset the 'Mommy Tax' for Working Mothers

Retrieved on:
Monday, December 11, 2023

BRISTOL, Vt., Dec. 11, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The term "Mommy Tax" sums up the challenges faced by working mothers—lower pay, fewer career opportunities, and higher childcare costs. Recent studies show that pandemic-related changes have increased their caregiving duties, affecting sleep and careers. Statistics show that for each child they have, mothers get a 5 to 10 percent pay cut while fathers get a 6 percent pay bump per child, on average.¹ According to Carleen Haylett, CEO of EnrichedHQ, "The vast majority of single mothers are in lower income communities with jobs that are in person, greatly impacting their ability to find and pay for reliable childcare. This group spends close to 50% of its monthly income contributing to this "Mommy Tax"—the amount of income required simply for the right to have a job."

Key Points:
  • To help even the playing field, EnrichedHQ works to dispel the myth that working mothers can do it all with less—less support, less money, less time, less sleep.
  • In partnership with employers, Enriched HQ is taking a proactive stance in addressing the pervasive issue of the "Mommy Tax" that burdens working mothers across industries.
  • Working mothers are most likely to be employed in critical services and support positions within communities.
  • A lack of affordable, quality options through high school threaten these working mothers' ability to continue providing these vital services.
