Now, new research shows the trading of spices for culinary use goes way back – some 2,000 years, to be precise.

Key Points:
  • Now, new research shows the trading of spices for culinary use goes way back – some 2,000 years, to be precise.
  • In a paper published today in Science Advances, we and our colleagues detail our findings of what seems to be evidence of Southeast Asia’s oldest known curry.
  • It’s also the oldest evidence of curry ever found outside India.

Grinding into the evidence

    • Rather, we were curious to learn about the function of a set of stone grinding tools known as “pesani”, which the people of the ancient Funan kingdom likely used to powder their spices.
    • Using a technique called starch grain analysis, we analysed microscopic remains recovered from a range of grinding and pounding tools excavated from the Oc Eo site.
    • Collectively, the results show the Oc Eo complex was occupied between the 1st and 8th centuries CE.

A spicy history

    • Most of our knowledge of the early spice trade has therefore come from clues in ancient documents from India, China and Rome.
    • This proves curry has a fascinating history beyond India, and that curry spices were coveted far and wide.

What’s next?

    • And we have yet to compare these findings with other larger plant remains unearthed from the site.
    • During an excavation conducted from 2017 to 2020, our team also collected a significant number of well-preserved seeds.

Key Points:
  • Audiences eagerly tune in weekly to watch famous chefs in impeccable attire offer their advice or criticism of a variety of dishes.
  • It features virtuoso chefs from around the world who would appear to have no end of stories and elaborate recipes.

Dirt, heat, charcoal and alcoholism

    • Indeed, kitchens were often located in basements, and the steam that filled them seemed to come from the mouths of hell.
    • These places had virtually no ventilation, no light and were always overheated.
    • Poultry feathers littered the filthy floor, which was also dripping with animal blood and dirty dishwater.
    • As the famous chef Antonin Carême (1783-1833), who died quite young, said: “It’s the charcoal that kills us but what does it matter?” The public opinion of chefs was also very negative.

The 20th century, the century of recognition

    • Despite this, the first half of the 20th century marked the beginning of gastronomic tourism.
    • The Michelin Guide and its star system appeared, first in France, and then in other European countries.
    • Later, in the 1950s, television brought them to the attention of an even wider audience, thanks to culinary programmes.

Gastronomy 2.0: chefs take on social networking

    • The transition to the 21st century and the advent of social networking have changed the way chefs gain notoriety.
    • Being excellent in the kitchen is no longer enough – they also need to know how to manage their image.
    • Social networks allow them to spread their story, shape their image and have influence.
    • In many cases, chefs are also assisted by press agencies to develop their marketing strategy and get the best possible media coverage.

Nel Law stowed away on her husband’s ship to Antarctica. She was the first Australian woman to see its ‘crystalline strangeness’

  • In 1961, a woman might be barred from a university position post-marriage if unable to show medical evidence of a hysterectomy.
  • A gay man was coyly, whisperingly, described as a “friend of Dorothy” (and might lose his job if word got out).
  • She became not only the first artist in residence on an expedition, but the first Australian woman to step foot on Antarctica.

    • Not to mention the tools of an artist: the advantages, nuances and limitations of oil, watercolour, charcoal, pencil.

Marriage’s choppy waters

    • Nel’s voyage to Antarctica and back, through the choppy and frequently icy waters of a longstanding marriage, is the story of a woman’s right to be, to change, to grow and to love.
    • Mead beautifully tracks Nel’s transition from being an interesting appurtenance to a man’s life, to an interesting woman in her own right.

Somaliland: Berbera city's growth is being held back by a power supply monopoly

Retrieved on:

Over the years, these revenues have mostly gone into the central state coffers, while the development of Berbera has been neglected.

Key Points:
  • Over the years, these revenues have mostly gone into the central state coffers, while the development of Berbera has been neglected.
  • When we visited the city for our research project on port infrastructure, international politics, and everyday life, this neglect was immediately visible.
  • Physical and social infrastructure – ranging from roads, water and electricity to health and schooling – were lacking.
  • Lack of regulation, and collaboration between the government and private businesses have spawned a monopoly of energy provision in Berbera.

Berbera port and development

    • The neglect of Berbera city stands in stark contrast to the modern technologies and equipment at its port.
    • Since 2017 the port has been managed by the Dubai-based logistics giant DP World.
    • And a transport corridor that links the port with Ethiopia is nearly complete.
    • So far, only limited investments have been made into the generation of clean energy, among them a solar mini grid in Berbera, funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.

The privatisation of energy

    • The energy sector, for example, started with private business people who initially used generators for their own consumption.
    • The businesses eventually provided their neighbourhoods with excess energy.
    • At least four major energy suppliers are competing for customers in Somaliland’s capital city, Hargeisa.

Mini grid solar power plant

    • The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, for example, provides financial and technical support for the transport corridor from Berbera to Ethiopia.
    • It has also initiated social projects for the urban poor in Berbera, like building schools and providing green and affordable energy.
    • It financed a 7MW solar power plant which was inaugurated in January 2021.
    • But immediately after the launch of the project, the Somaliland Ministry of Mines and Energy handed over the solar facility to Berbera Power House.
    • During the inauguration of the mini grid solar power plant, the finance minister proposed that electricity prices in Berbera would be reduced to US$0.1 per unit compared to US$0.6 per unit before the investment.
